Apple season has just begun and I love apples. You can make many wonderful apple desserts but Apple Crisp is the easiest and delicious!!

Apple Crisp can make in different ways and in this recipe, we are using 3 special ingredients, Brown butter, whole wheat flour, and maple syrup. In most of the traditional recipes, it is all-purpose flour, cold butter and brown sugar.

The brown butter gives a nuttiness and aroma to the crispy topping. Whole wheat flour is healthier than all-purpose flour.

How To Make Apple Crisp – Simple Steps

  1. Melt the Butter and Brown it
  2. Prepare the Apple filling with maple syrup, vanilla, 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Make the topping with brown butter, whole wheat flour, oats, cinnamon
  4. Bake it and serve with icecream

  • ¼ cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Note 1

Topping

  • 1 cups regular old fashioned rolled oats Note 2
  • 1/4 cup pecans chopped (Note 3)
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat flour Note 4
  • ½ cup unsalted butter 115 g
  • ½ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Add the apples to a baking dish and toss with maple syrup, vanilla, a pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Melt Butter: Add butter to a small saucepan, increase the heat to medium, stirring often. The butter will bubble and sizzle around the edges once melted. Continue to stir. The butter will turn golden brown in around 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and keep it aside.
  • In a medium bowl combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the melted butter and mix until well combined. Sprinkle this evenly over the apples.
  • Transfer this to the preheated oven and bake until the apples are tender and the crumb topping is deep golden brown. The crisp will be bubbling on the edges. It takes about 45 minutes.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Recipe Notes:
1. As the apple cook it leaves out some liquid, if you want the liquid to thicken up little bit add 1 -2 tablespoon cornstarch or all-purpose flour. This is an optional ingredient.
2. The best oats for crisp are whole oats, but instant oats can be used if necessary. Just make the crumble topping a little more powdered. Replace whole oats with quick oats in a 1:1 ratio.
3. If you don't want to use nuts, you can replace them with just oats or grape nut cereal.
4. You can use either all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour. If you just use oats then the topping will become greasy. Don't be tempted to cut back on the flour;
Brown the butter: In this recipe, we use brown butter which gives a nutty flavor to the dish. To brown the butter, place the butter in a small saucepan, increase the heat to medium. The butter cooks uniformly on medium heat, which is crucial to the success of this simple process. As the butter melts, start stirring to move it around. The butter will bubble and sizzle around the edges once melted. Continue to stir. The butter will turn golden brown in around 5 minutes from when you started (depending on how much butter you used).
